How It Works

Four concepts. Everything else follows.

The Investments module is built around a clean four-layer hierarchy. Once you understand it, every screen and workflow in the module makes sense — whether you're setting up a new bond, recording a stock purchase, or generating accruals.

All three asset types — Stocks, Bonds, and Notes — share the same underlying mechanics. The terms change per instrument, but the logic doesn't.

One model. Three instruments.

Template → Instrument → Holding → Lot. This hierarchy governs Stocks, Bonds, and Notes equally. Learn it once and every transaction, posting screen, and report will feel familiar — regardless of which asset type you're working with.

LAYER 1

Template

Defines the GL accounts and calculation methods (costing, accrual, amortization) that an instrument type uses. Set once per instrument type in Setup.

GL + Calculation Rules
LAYER 2

Instrument

The security itself — ticker, CUSIP, coupon rate, maturity date, terms. One instrument record per security, shared across all holders.

The Security
LAYER 3

Holding

Your organization's position in an instrument. One instrument can have multiple holdings — for example, held across different funds or legal entities.

Your Position
LAYER 4

Lot

An individual purchase, costed on sale using FIFO by default. Gives you precise per-lot cost basis for accurate gain/loss calculation.

Asset Types

Three modules. One familiar workflow.

Stocks, Bonds, and Notes each have a dedicated module with the specific fields and screens their instruments require — but the Template → Instrument → Holding → Lot structure is identical across all three.

01

Stocks

Manage equity positions with a combined Investment + Holding maintenance screen. Run market valuations manually or import bulk prices via CSV or Excel.

02

Bonds

Track coupon-paying fixed-income instruments with built-in accrual and amortization generation. Supports rate resets and auto-generates unposted accrual documents on schedule.

03

Notes

Manage term notes and their accruals using the same structure as Bonds — with accrual generation flowing into the same posting review screen for consistent control.

Configuration

Setup is the foundation — get it right once.

Everything in Setup > Investments flows downstream. GL Templates determine how every transaction posts; Classifications and Optional Fields shape how you slice and report your portfolio.

GL Templates

Set separately per instrument type. Defines the posting accounts, costing method, and (for bonds and notes) accrual and amortization methods. One template governs all instruments of that type.

Classifications

Reporting dimensions — sector, region, rating, or any grouping your organization uses. Includes a manual Sort field so that scales and grouped reports read in the correct order.

Optional Fields

Custom fields per asset type, completely separate from Contact and Loan optional fields. Extend the data model without touching the rest of the platform.

Module & Feature Switches

The Investments module must be enabled under Setup > Company > Modules & Features, with individual switches per instrument type — Stocks, Bonds, Notes — turned on separately.

Where to find it

All Investments configuration lives in a single location. Enable the module first, then configure each instrument type you need.

Transaction Lifecycle

Record → Review → Post. Every time.

Every transaction — purchase, sale, coupon, accrual — follows the same lifecycle. Posted entries are permanent. Reversals create a new document, never an edit-in-place.

STEP 01

Record

Create the transaction. Unposted — fully editable and deletable at this stage. No GL impact yet.

STEP 02

Generate

For bonds and notes: auto-generate unposted accrual and amortization documents via the Generate function.

STEP 03

Review on Posting Screen

Filter by date, tick rows, see live counts of items queued for posting or deletion.

STEP 04

Post

Moves the position and writes the journal entry to GL. One-time, permanent. Posted entries are never edited in place.

STEP 05

Reverse if Needed

Correct an error by posting an explicit reversing document — preserving the audit trail both ways.

Reporting

Reports that tie to your GL — not around it.

Investments reports are available from within each module or from the central Reports Menu. The currency toggle is the most common source of confusion — and the easiest to resolve.

$

Functional Currency Reports

Converted to your company's reporting currency. This is the default — and the view that ties directly to your GL. Always start here when reconciling.

fx

Source Currency Reports

Shows transaction values in the currency they were recorded in. Useful for verifying individual positions, but won't match the GL unless your reporting currency and transaction currency are the same.

P

Portfolio Reports

Accessible per-module (Stocks, Bonds, Notes) or from the central Reports Menu. Slice by Classification dimensions — sector, region, rating — using your configured sort order.

GL

GL Tie-Out

If a report doesn't match the GL, check the currency toggle first — switching from Source to Functional resolves the discrepancy in most cases. It's not an error; it's a toggle.

The most common reporting question — answered.

If your Investments report total doesn't match your GL balance, the answer is almost always the same: you're looking at Source currency instead of Functional.

Fix: Switch the currency toggle to Functional (reporting currency). This converts all holdings to your company reporting currency — the same basis your GL uses — and the totals will align.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Investments module

Is the Investments module separate from Syndication?

Yes — they're completely separate. The Investments module manages your organization's Stocks, Bonds, and Notes as company investments. Syndication handles investor participations in loans on the lending side. The two modules don't share data or workflows.

+Can one instrument have multiple holdings?

Yes. One instrument (the security itself) can have multiple Holdings — for example, the same bond held across different funds or legal entities within your organization. Each holding tracks its own position and lots independently.

+What costing method does SYNDi use for lots?

FIFO (First In, First Out) by default. When you sell or dispose of a position, the system costs against the earliest-purchased lots first, giving you an accurate cost basis and gain/loss calculation per lot.

+Can I edit a posted transaction?

No — posted entries are permanent, consistent with SYNDi's posted-is-permanent rule used across the lending side. If you need to correct a posted transaction, you do so by creating an explicit reversing document. This preserves a complete audit trail in both directions.
